Discworld
These books has changed my life. Completely.
I haven’t craved to complete a whole series of novels, until now.
Sidenote: I now have a whole blog category dedicated to Discworld. Damn you addiction! XP
It all started with a few quotable quotes taken from the books that I found in a fan site, more or less 2 years ago. I immediately fell in love with his concept of Death the character and Rincewind, a wizzard (And that is no typo). Just just by the quotes.
I was then already on a quest to find any books regarding Discworld. Just to satisfy the curiousity if indeed the characters are as loveable as the quotes made them to be. I really wouldn’t want to be disappointed that it felt like a misleading trailer for a movie. So I was eager on finding out the truth.
Due to inavailabilty and lack of resources (funds or research) for 2 years, I found no trace of any books by Terry Pratchett. Nothing. It was almost next to impossible. I’ve went through every branch of National Bookstore and Powerbooks I get into whenever I’m out, but no copies.
Until October 2004 when I found the Art of Discworld. It was an unbelievable stroke of luck! I actually had enough money to buy the book on the spot. I only contemplated for 15 minutes if I were gonna buy it or not. At that time, it was the closest thing I have to the Discworld novels. And it strengthened my resolve to get any of the books.
Come November?December 2004, Cathy brought home a copy of The Color of Magic for me. The first of the series. I was totally delighted. And after reading it (in only 3-3.5 hours tops, I was craving for more. It was all that I hoped for and more. It was witty, fantastic and insightful. And humorous! Don’t forget humorous!
I was definitely on the prowl for more books! I want more!
But there was a drought. I didn’t know how and where to get any copies of the novels. It was just sad… Until Fully Booked opened at Gateway Mall at early May 2005. And lo behold, I spy a copy of the Light Fantastic (the 2nd book) on the shelves. I was more than delighted, I was enthralled! I bought it on the spot!
The next week when I came back to the store, it appears the store has noticed somebody likes Terry Pratchett, because I saw the almost entire series on the shelves. And I was like: OMG!!! I quickly bought what I could with the money I had, 6 books! It was beyond my average limit. I usually buy 1 book every 2 months, but with the series in front of me I was like a kid all over again. And I wanted every thing! Since I couldn’t buy the whole lot of them, I strategized which titles I was gonna buy. So I simply took the books that had only one copy left.
And just this week, May 31, with a salary merit increase in tow, I bought the next 11 books on the shelf, without batting an eyelash. Yes, it was my own freak of a fetish. I never did that, ever, even with clothes or food. Only the Discworld novels has that effect on me.
And so, in a span of 4 weeks, I have managed to get 19 out of the 33 existing Discworld Novels (I’ve been told there is 1 more in the making Yey!). And am still not done. So yes, am now officially bankcrupt. Damn you Terry Pratchett! And I mean that in a loving way. I’m just glad the series is not made up of a 100 volumes or something, because I’m definitely gonna die a poor, hungry but happy bookworm. On the next page is my checklist that will be updated for my own reference. After the novels, am off to get the companion books and the science of discworld novels! Aha!
I heard Neil Gaiman will be coming to Manila this month. It’s okay. But if it’s Terry Pratchett, I’ll definitely be first in line with all my books in tow for an autograph! But it’s very unlikely to happen. Because so far, the only person I know other than me who likes the books is my sister XP
So yes, I guess I’ll have to settle with Gaiman.
Trivia: Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman did a collab novel, the Good Omens~
*sigh*
Yes, am done raving
Note: Checklist is on the next page –>
